What is a Konjac Sponge?
Oh the simple sponge. We use sponges, all around our homes but rarely give them much thought. They do not feature in art or song. We use them in the bathroom to become our best squeaky clean and shining selves. We use them in the kitchen to clean up messes on tables and counters and to scrub those pans we are a little worried will never become clean. We even use them in the bedroom to put on our makeup or other facial products so we feel confident as we face our days and to remove those products when we are getting ready to get a good night's sleep.
Sponges are everywhere and we use them throughout the day, but sadly these everyday sponges are often made of polyester, polyurethane, or vegetal cellulose. So put another way, the sponges you often use everyday are made of oil-based plastics. These sponges are neither sustainable nor something which seems appealing to use on our delicate skin.
What is Konjac?
For those of us who are trying to live green lives and have green homes one common substitution for these oil-based sponges are Konjac Sponges. Since many of us are not familiar with such sponges let’s start at the beginning. What is Konjac? Surprisingly Konjac refers to a type of potato. The Konjac potato or Konnyaku is a perennial plant native to Asia and can be found growing wild at very high altitudes. Konnyaku has been used in Korea, Japan and China for over 1,500 years as medicine, food, a dieting aid and a beauty product.
Konjac is known for being rich in vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, & E), protein, lipids, fatty acids and natural minerals such as copper, zinc, iron and magnesium. Combining these powerhouse natural ingredients with its gentle texture, Konjac is not only establishing itself as a healthy food, but also makes it excellent for use in skin care. Konjac is 97% water and the plant is naturally alkaline, which leaves skin perfectly balanced.
Konjac Sponges, A Natural Cleanser
So how does a potato growing in Asia become a sponge? Konjac Sponges are made with pure Konjac fibre and nourishing mineral-rich extracts. They deeply cleanse, gently exfoliate and refine, revitalize and refresh skin for a radiant complexion. Due to Konjac fiber's excellent water-holding properties, the surface is always covered with water, and has a very distinct texture that may take a moment to get used to. As a result of this layer of water, the fiber hardly comes into direct contact with the skin and will not scrape even with hard scrubbing.
Due to the plant's claimed health giving properties, the Japanese people initially used the Konjac Sponge for babies due to its gentle texture and its excellent cleansing ability. Since then, it has gained popularity and developed to be a facial and body cleansing sponge for all ages and all types of skin. It is amazing what a type of wild potato is able to become.
